Framing
Meet Everest Medicines Limited / 雲頂新耀有限公司 (HKEX: 01952) and its continuing-connected-transaction circular — English source, Traditional Chinese target, two Chinese lines that somehow cleared QA with a straight face.
Public filing — Everest Medicines (01952): EN · TC. Direction: E2C. English prevails. The Chinese side did not get the memo.
1. “Intelligence” → 智慧: when market data becomes a TED Talk
English pricing policy, with a straight face. Chinese, also with a straight face:
Source (EN)
…DXY Insight Database, an intelligence and analysis data platform that covers multiple databases…
Target (TC)
…丁香園 Insight 數據庫…一個智慧及數據分析平台…
Yes. Intelligence — as in market / business intelligence, 情報, the boring work of scraping tender prices so Chapter 14A pricing is not a vibe check — has been upgraded to 智慧. Wisdom. Smartness. The word you put on an AI landing page when you have nothing left to say about the product.
數據分析 for “analysis”? Fine. 智慧 for “intelligence”? That is not a near miss. That is swapping the information limb for a branding limb and hoping nobody notices because both characters look “serious.”
Part of speech / syntax (because the dictionary alone will not save you):
- English:
an [intelligence and analysis] data platform - Structure: determiner + attributive noun compound (intelligence and analysis) modifying head noun platform. Both intelligence and analysis are nouns used as prenominal modifiers — “what kind of data platform.”
- Sense of intelligence here = countable/mass noun in the information sense (market intelligence), not the adjective “intelligent,” and not “wisdom.”
- Chinese attempted:
一個智慧及數據分析平台 - Structure: 一個 + 智慧(N) + 及 + 數據分析(N) + 平台(N). On paper it looks parallel — two noun modifiers before 平台. In meaning it is not. 數據分析 still maps to analysis. 智慧 maps to a different English lemma (wisdom / smartness), so the coordinate structure is syntactic cosplay: same tree, wrong leaf.
- What the English tree required: a Chinese noun that can sit in the same slot as 情報 / 資訊情報 / 商業情報 — an information-class N, not a virtue-class N.
- Bonus fail: if someone thought English intelligence was the adjective “intelligent,” they still chose the wrong Chinese adjective family (智慧/智能/聰明). The English word in this NP is not an adjective at all.
Fix, for people who still care:
Why bother: that database is the public-tender reference under the CCT pricing policy. Call it a “wisdom platform” and Chinese readers get mindfulness instead of a market benchmark. Charming. Useless.
2. 「上市許可持有人」指上市許可持有人: the definition that defines itself into oblivion
English Definitions. Chinese 釋義, peak circularity:
Source (EN)
“MAH” — marketing authorization holder
Target (TC)
「上市許可持有人」指上市許可持有人
English expands an acronym. Chinese prints the Chinese label twice and files it under “Definitions.” That is not a gloss. That is a shrug in formal attire.
Part of speech / syntax (definitions edition):
- English pattern:
"MAH" — marketing authorization holder - Structure: definiendum (acronym, proper-name-like noun) + gloss = NP expansion: marketing (Adj/attributive N) + authorization (N) + holder (N). The gloss is not synonymous restatement of a Chinese calque; it is an English compositional NP that unpacks the letters.
- Chinese pattern:
「上市許可持有人」指上市許可持有人 - Structure: 「X」指 X — definiendum = definiens. That is a tautological identity, not a definition. There is no expansion, no relative clause, no English remnant, no domain classifier. Syntactically well-formed. Semantically empty.
- What a real definition tree needs: definiendum ≠ definiens — keep
MAH(or a Chinese headword) on the left and put a true expansion NP on the right.
And because this is an HKEX circular, the shrug has a bonus feature: bare 上市 is house language for Listing — securities listing. So the empty 「上市許可持有人」 entry does not merely fail to explain MAH. It cheerfully invites the wrong reading: holder of listing permission, not holder of a drug marketing authorization. Two industries, one lazy character, zero differentiation.
Fix — 藥品 stays on the face of the definition. Not “implied.” Not “context will save us.” On the face:
Bare 「上市許可持有人」 is not a rescue mission. It is the same crash, slower.
Why bother: MAH status decides which cooperation model applies and which statutory duties the Group does not take on. Empty definition = missing gate. Ambiguous with Listing = wrong gate. Pick your failure mode.
Please stop
- Stop rendering market intelligence as 智慧 unless the English actually asked for a guru.
- Stop “defining” acronyms as their own Chinese labels. Expand them. For MAH, expand them against Listing — 藥品上市許可持有人, or leave the English gloss where Chinese readers can see it.
- And if the same circular already gets arm’s length right as 公平交易原則 in Pricing, then sneaks 公平合理 into Reasons… that is not house style. That is a tell. (Scored; not kept for this post. We can only roast so many things before lunch.)
