Language Watchdog

An ongoing desk column on EN≠TC and filing parallel misses. Written for other translation suppliers, and for clients who need language that holds under pressure.

What this column is

Side-by-side reads of Chinese originals and English parallels. When the metric, the diligence step, or the collocation slips, the English-only reader gets a different document.

A note is filed with a date and the name of the source. This page is the index. It lists a note after that read is published. Four notes are on file.

What the column watches

EN≠TC
English and Chinese part company on a defined term, a metric, a collocation, or a word sense. The Fibocom (00638) note shows “the Stock Exchange” used as the HKEX defined term where the Chinese says 證券交易所. The Schroders Monthly Markets note shows House-passed rendered as 參議院, and profit-taking rendered as 套利. The Everest Medicines (01952) note shows market intelligence rendered as 智慧. The CPIC note shows person-times of coverage rendered as policies issued.
Filing parallel misses
A diligence step or a representation in the Chinese does not survive in the English parallel. In the CPIC note, the enquiry-and-confirmation line is one of those misses.

On file

Newest first, including the latest. The last row stays empty until the desk files another note.

Trade in Words is sibling desk writing on the Greenspan Put: a literal rendering that turned a market metaphor into a product label.
